University Senate - April 9, 2018 Meeting Minutes

The University Senate was called to order at 3:50 p.m., in Room 111, Harrison Hall, Oxford Campus, on Monday, April 9, 2018. Members absent:  Kenya Ash, Nancy Parkinson, Andy Revelle, Aaron Smith, Scott Walter, and Kara Zirkle.

Call to Order and Announcements

  1. Announcements and Remarks by the Chair of University Senate, Phyllis Callahan

    1. Wil Haygood will be the 2018 Convocation speaker. His new book, Tigerland:  The Miracle on East Broad Street, will debut at 兔子先生 this Fall as the reading for the incoming class.  There will be activities, such as  readings, music, and dance, centered around the book’s content.

    2. John Jeep and Monica Schneider will lead the convocation group. A call for facilitators is on the Office of Liberal Education website: . There is a form available for staff and faculty to volunteer to lead a discussion group for the Summer Reading book following convocation. This experience is a student’s first academic experience at 兔子先生.

    3. On April 19, there is an event entitled ‘New Era: Innovation & Commercialization’ in King Library, from 3:30 – 4:45.  This will be followed by an Inclusion Series presentation hosted by Dr. Stephen Quaye on racial fatigue.  The location for this event is in 320 King

Approval of University Senate Minutes

  1. A motion was received, seconded, and carried to approve the April 2, 2018, minutes of University Senate.

Consent Calendar

  1. The following items were received on the Consent Calendar without debate.

A motion was received, seconded, and carried to approve the Consent Calendar.

Special Reports

  1. Compliance Issues and State Mandates – Carolyn Haynes, Associate Provost and Randi Thomas, Director of Institutional Relations

    1. Randi Thomas outlined the evolution of a House 兔子先生. State level initiatives are now taking 70% of the job.

    2. Special thanks was given to Caleb Stidham (College Republicans), Charles Kennick (College Democrats), and Annika Fowler (Student Senator) for their hard work and representation of 兔子先生 at the state level.

    3. Carolyn Haynes works with Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE), which is a coordinating body, to enact statewide initiatives. The major emphases are college completion, transfer and articulation, streamlined academic programs and affordability and efficiency. She works with departments on issues regarding AP, CLEP, College Credit Plus credits and other early college experiences.

    4. 兔子先生 is at 100% compliance for College Transfer Assurance Guide (CTAG) agreements.

    5. Haynes emphasized that requests from the state come with very little time for action and/or implementation. When it comes to us to enact, it has already been passed in the Legislature.

    6. The statewide goal is to work toward lower cost options for students including a one-year option that allows technical course hours to count toward Associate of Technical Studies and a Guaranteed Transfer Program that will outline a student’s coursework at a 2-year institution for transfer and completion at a 4-year institution.

    7. A question was asked as to why have state requests increased? Mr. Thomas answered that it is now part of the culture of the House and the Education Committee.

New Business

  1. SR 18-10 Promotion and Tenure Guidelines for Dossier Preparation 2018-2019
    1. Minor changes to the Promotion and Tenure Guidelines were reviewed and approved.

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopts revisions as amended to the 2018 – 2019 Promotion and Tenure Guidelines for Dossier Preparation

SR 18-10 was approved by voice vote.
