Why ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú?
I ultimately chose to study at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University because of the variety of opportunities the school has to offer. When first visiting and going to events like Make it ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, I realized just how many resources there were for me to thrive. Additionally, it was very easy to envision my life as a student here. It truly felt like home from the beginning!
How did you choose your major?
I chose my major after committing and meeting with a CAS advisor. I was already pursuing a major in Piano Performance (which I have since dropped for schedule conflict reasons), but wanted to add something in that was related to English. With her help, I ultimately decided on linguistics because of the range of professional opportunities earning a degree in it has to offer.
Key Moment at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú
A key academic experience was taking my first linguistics class in my first semester: LIN 201 - Introduction to Linguistics. It was the first formal experience I had with the subject, and it made me realize my passion for my major right away. Since then, my love for it has only grown and I am continuously grateful that I am in the program!
Other Notable Experience
One of the best things about my time at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University thus far, besides the amazing academics, is my experience in student organizations. I got to join several when attending my first Mega Fair (in the Fall of 2023), and have since stayed with most of them! Due to the range of opportunities that they offer, I have been able to have a diverse and fulfilling extracurricular life filled with fun clubs (Hook, Yarn, and Needles), service clubs (Cinci Smiles and SEAL Ambassadors - the latter of which I am no longer a part of), and professional development (Women in Law). Along with this, the culture of student organizations here enabled me to start my own: the Linguists’ Organization. This club gives me a platform to share my passions as a linguist and help students get involved with the Linguistics Program. All in all, without student organizations, my time here wouldn’t be nearly as wonderful as it has been!
Another ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Moment
I feel really lucky to be a part of the Honors College at this university. In it, I have gained a variety of rich experiences and taken classes that I otherwise would not have. I am also currently working on my Honors Senior Project (for which I have earned the CAS Dean’s Scholar Award), which is unlike any academic endeavor I have gone through thus far and is proving to be a great supplement to my education!
Advice to Prospective Students
The best piece of advice I could give to a student who is considering coming here is to encourage them attend many of the pre-commitment events that the university has to offer. Whether it’s taking a tour, going to Make it ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, or even shadowing another student, it is crucial to explore all of the opportunities and resources this school can provide. Not all schools have such a great support system for prospective students, so it’s extra important to utilize these tools!
What are your career goals?
My plans post-graduation are attending a Master’s in Library Science with an Archival Studies concentration program. I currently work in the Special Collections and Archives Library at King and absolutely love it — and am very excited to prospectively continue my academic career down this path. As for my professional life, my main two aspirations are 1) being an archivist at a library and 2) being a taxonomist. I feel as though both of these options utilize my passions and skills in both linguistics and library science, and will be accessible to me upon earning my Master’s degree.
