ACIREMA: An International Education Simulation

ACIREMA is an international education simulation designed for participants to gain insight, understanding, and perspective into the experience of entering a U.S. higher education institution as an international student.

The ACIREMA (America spelled backwards) simulation will be offered as part of International Education Week 2021 to ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú employees as a Job Enrichment Learning Opportunity and/or as an opportunity to learn more about the international student experience.

Participants will assume the role of an incoming student from outside the U.S. and be asked to navigate the necessary offices and processes to begin studying at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú as an international student. A boxed lunch will also be provided for participants.

Fall Conversations: Old Words and New Worlds

"Undergraduate Research Experiences in History of the English Language (ENG 301) and Medieval Literature Courses"

Tory Pearman, PH.D. will discuss a semester-long research project completed by students in ENG 301. In groups, students research and compile the definitions, etymologies, and uses of terms relating to disability. Their research is then used to create entries that are published in the Online Medieval Disability Glossary, a project produced by the Society for the Study of Disability in the Middle Ages. After a brief description of the assignment, former ENG 301 student Brett Ball will describe his personal experience with the project. Ball will also discuss his participation in the International Congress on Medieval Studies, a yearly international conference devoted to the study of medieval literature and culture, which he attended as part of the EGS 490: Malory and the Arthurian Legend course.

"The Evolution of the Cartonera Publishing Phenomenon"

In Latin America, Cartonera refers to the process of upcycling salvaged cardboard and other materials to use as material for books. Born of challenging economic conditions in this region, Cartonera also promotes cooperative learning and literacy in communities. Cartonera is much more than a literary movement as it incorporates visual arts and community to produce works that build a more direct relationship between authors, publishers, and readers. Mora, Ph.D. will explore the evolution of the Cartonera publishing phenomenon that began in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2003 and its spread to other regions of Latin America and beyond.

The World Affairs Council – Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky hosts the annual high school event, International Education Summit (IES) each year during International Education Week (November 16-20, 2020). This year, they are hosting a virtual International Education Summit on “Peace and Justice." What is Food Sovereignty for Rice Farmers in Northern Iran? (GEOWeek2020)

ACIREMA Exercise

(Requires Registration)

Time: 11am | Location: Shriver Center Dolibois Room B

The simulation exercise, ACIREMA, is designed to sensitize participants to the difficulties that international students encounter in their quest for an American education. It acquaints the participants with the procedures students must follow from the initial contact with a U.S. educational institution to their arrival on campus. The cross-cultural aspects of the exercise help to explain international students perspectives. The objective of the simulation is to assist participants in identifying emotionally with international students coming to their institution and become more patient and understanding.

Hula Dance at the Regionals

Time: 11am | Location: Johnston Hall 142

Hula is a dance that was developed in the Hawaiian Islands by the Polynesians who originally settled there. Come experience hula dance with us!

Global Holiday Party

Time: 5pm | Location: Shriver Center Heritage Room

The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University Diversity Affairs Council is committed to forming and providing spaces for coalitions and alliances to be built within the intercultural community of multicultural and diverse student organizations and their membership through analyzing and addressing issues of climate, policy, procedure and curriculum within the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú community. Annually, the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University Diversity Affairs Council organizes the Global Holiday Party – which includes a lineup of local and global performances alongside food prepared and brought by participating student organizations. Attending organizations are given the freedom to represent their culture in whichever creative way they see fit.

Mini U International Story Time

During this event, ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú international staff, faculty, and graduate students will read stories from their own cultures to the children at Mini University.

Discover Islam

Time: 5pm | Location: Hall Auditorium

Dr. Baher Foad will speak about the true values and beliefs of Islam, clarify misconceptions about Islam and the Quran, and help students find common ground between different religions. Foad is a rheumatologist by training but has a BA and Master’s degree in theology. He has been writing religious books for the past 30 years and approaches religion from a logical perspective, seeking to understand the rationale of divine orders.

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a meet and greet in the green room at Hall Auditorium followed by a lecture and Q & A from 6 - 7:30 p.m. There will also be books on display in the lobby with some of the speaker's publications.

NAFSA Simon Award for Campus Internationalization Presidential Panel

Time: 4pm | Location: MacMillan Hall 212

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú from Simon Award-winning institutions, including ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University, will discuss their successes in campus internationalization during this Live Webcast Panel discussion.

ISSS Thanksgiving Dinner

Time: 5:30pm | Location: MacMillan Hall 212

This annual event takes place during International Education Week and is open to all ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University international students and scholars, staff and faculty, as well as Oxford community members. The purpose is to share this American tradition with our international students and scholars.

With around 300 people in attendance each year, it is one of ISSS’ signature events and includes a traditional Thanksgiving dinner as well as plenty of opportunities for fellowship and conversation.

A Taste of Luxembourg

Time: 6pm | Location: MacMillan Hall 212

Luxembourgish students at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú invite everyone to come out and try traditional luxembourgish Gromperekichelcher (potato pancakes) and homemade applesauce! Gromperekichelcher are associated with every celebration throughout the year; they are sold on Christmas markets, on farmers markets, on our national holiday etc. The potato pancakes are traditionally eaten with apple sauce and are made of onions, potatos, flour, salt and pepper, butter, parsley, shallots, garlic and eggs.
