Research
My research team focuses on topologically protected states in condensed matter systems. My team explores two broad classes of phenomena, topological magnetic textures (skyrmions) and topological semimetals/insulators. Skyrmions are vortexes in the spin-structure of the solid and offer a novel route to explore magnetic-particle interactions and manipulation of magnetic textures. Topological insulators/semimetals host spin-selected surface conduction where electron and hole combinations behave as massless fermions with an additional spin-momentum locking, leading to interesting physics for the behavior of these electrons/holes.
My team’s effort can be divided into three main thrusts. The first thrust is novel materials development that hosts unique topologically protected states. The second thrust is the measurement, manipulation, and control of topological properties. The third thrust is device fabrication utilizing topologically protected states for sensing, memory, and defense applications.
My team also utilize advanced microscopy techniques to characterize on materials and devices down to the atomic length scale. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) allows for the measurement of spin-textures down to the single atom allowing my team to map out skyrions and their hosting atomic environment. Quasi-particle interference STM enables the measurement of the band structure of materials at the surface, this is particulary important for the imaging of topologically protected mass electron states. Students on my team will develop thin-film growth expertise that can directly translate into the private semiconductor industry or academic pursuits.
