Acinetobacter baumannii Bacteria

Acinetobacter baumannii is a Gram-negative bacillus that is aerobic and . An opportunistic pathogen, Acinetobacter baumannii has a high incidence among immunocompromised people, particularly those who have experienced a prolonged hospital stay. It can cause serious infections in the lungs, blood, and brain. It may also cause urinary tract and wound infections.

Acinetobacter bacteria are not airborne, but can be spread through direct contact with surfaces, objects, or the skin of people that are contaminated with Acinetobacter baumannii. Acinetobacter infections remain difficult to treat. The prevalence of drug-resistant strains is increasing, and treatment options are increasingly limited. The use of  antibiotics against these infections is often the final treatment option.
