This spring, the Department of Spanish and Portuguese is hosting Jorge Merlos, interpreter and media relations assistant for the Cincinnati Reds, as part of its new guest lecture series for students in Business Spanish (SPN 317). Merlos will discuss how he uses his Spanish language skills to assist Hispanic players such as Elly de la Cruz and Alexis Diaz.

The free lecture, conducted in Spanish, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Alumni Hall 001 at 10:05 a.m. Spanish-speaking members of the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú community are all welcome to attend.

The lecture series began last fall by inviting Spanish-speaking professionals from throughout the greater Cincinnati and Columbus areas. Business leaders and entrepreneurs from The Arepa Place, 5/3 Bank, and the Ohio Department of Development have shared their experiences and career advice with students.

“Our speakers offer valuable insights into how Spanish majors and minors can expand their career opportunities by way of their multilingual skill sets,” said Kelly Ferguson, assistant professor of Spanish. “Jorge Merlos will explain his important role in helping Reds players communicate during interviews and press junkets as well as during their day-to-day life in Cincinnati.”

Merlos’ family is from El Salvador. He has credited his grandmother for making sure that he used Spanish early on since she didn't speak English. In addition to interpreting for various players, he shoots videos of them and is an integral part of the Reds' media relations team.

During his presentation, Merlos will discuss his career journey, the responsibilities of his career, the importance of Spanish, and how he has mastered learning all of the different variants of Spanish. He will also take questions from the audience at the end of his talk.
