Scripps Embraces Agile to Adapt to Change
In an era where adaptability determines success, the Scripps Gerontology Center is pioneering innovative approaches to research management and collaboration. By implementing Agile methodologies—a framework traditionally associated with software development—Scripps is reimagining how academic research centers operate.
Research centers often face challenges when attempting to pivot their programs and projects to address emerging societal needs. Traditional project management approaches often struggle to accommodate the rapid pace of change of today. Agile is a flexible, iterative approach to project and program management that emphasizes adaptability, collaboration, and stakeholder satisfaction. While Agile has transformed numerous business sectors over the past decade, its application in academic research (and higher education) settings represents a significant innovation.
Implementing Agile at Scripps
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a team of Scripps researchers collaborated on a case study using Agile to deliver preference-based, person-centered care within a large nursing home. This case study was later published in the Journal of the Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medical Association. The research introduced and highlighted the benefits of Agile to the Scripps team, and the exploration of Agile began.
Since implementing the Agile approach, every Scripps team member has now completed comprehensive training and earned industry-recognized professional certification. This investment has established a shared vocabulary, understanding, and practical toolkit that facilitates smoother collaboration across research teams. Applying an Agile mindset has helped Scripps staff to prioritize work, analyze and improve processes for maximum efficiency, and engage in productive conversations to advance the Scripps mission.
Expanding Agile at Scripps
Since initially implementing the Agile framework, Scripps has extended its Agile initiatives to include graduate students and fellows, who now actively apply these principles to their research and collaborative projects. This expansion ensures that the next generation of gerontology researchers develops valuable skills applicable across multiple sectors.
To complement its Agile methodology, Scripps has implemented Trello, a web-based project management platform that optimizes task organization, progress tracking and team collaboration. For Scripps’ hybrid workforce, Trello has proven instrumental in maintaining the effectiveness and cohesion typically associated with fully co-located teams. Trello provides a visual representation of the team’s work that helps to set priorities and identify bottlenecks before they affect project timelines.
For a research center dedicated to improving the lives of older adults through innovative research, education, and service, this commitment to organizational agility ensures Scripps will continue making meaningful contributions to the field of gerontology for decades to come.
