CEC shines at Grandparents College

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University alumni grandparents and their grandchildren aged 8-12 enjoyed Doug Hart's paper making course, along with other courses and extracurriculars across campus July 10-12, 2024.

Grandparents College is an annual three-day summer event which welcomes ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University alumni and their grandchildren aged 8-12 for a dedicated experience of togetherness and learning. This unique intergenerational program includes sleeping in a residence hall and eating in a college dining hall — experiences that can be as thrilling and novel for little ones as they are nostalgic and memory-rich for their grandpparent alumni.

This year, Grandparents College offered 14 courses across campus, a selection of which can be explored further in this . One of the most popular courses highlighted in the article was led by CEC's own Doug Hart, Lab Coordinator and Technician for the Department of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering. For this year's Grandparents College, Doug taught "Wood Chips to Paper Cuts! A Quick 'How to' in Paper Making."

Under guidance and direction from CEC’s Doug Hart, Grandparents College participants made their own paper in a College of Engineering and Computing lab.

For Stu Petersen ’76, a repeat participant who attends Grandparents College with his grandson Evan, this is paper making class one of the standouts of the entire experience.

“I always like the paper class,” said Stu, as quoted in . “Making the paper and seeing the other uses for paper that are not traditional, not newsprint, not boxes. And how they’re experimenting with taking it further. What’s the next step with paper?”

Next year’s Grandparents College is July 15-17, 2025. If you are interested in leading a CEC course or learning experience in next year's session, please contact Mollie Young at youngmr@miamioh.edu.
