Naaborle Sackeyfio

Dr. Sackeyfio teaches courses on global and intercultural studies; international studies; and African governance and development. Her research interests encompass governance; political economy; energy and resource politics; gender and sustainable development with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Sackeyfio's research interests encompass governance; political economy; energy and resource politics; gender and sustainable development with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa.

Her book, Energy Politics and Rural Development: The Case of Ghana (Palgrave MacMillan, 2017) is the culmination of fieldwork completed in Ghana. The book's foremost contribution is its exploration of the prerequisites for successful, effective public service delivery of electricity while addressing the larger question of democratic governance amid market oriented reforms and rural development challenges that nascent democracies face. Her second book project will explore African migrant incorporation in Japan and the nature of identity, belonging, and economic mobility in unfamiliar landscapes.

Dr. Sackeyfio's concurrent research interrogates the dynamics of African migrant communities and the nature of political as well as economic incorporation in East Asia. She examines capitalism and runaway development in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the intersection between neoliberalism, micro-finance, and economic empowerment for West African women. The latter project in particular explores how the primacy of market driven policies, shifting modes of governance under heightened conditions of globalization have varying consequences for West African women in the context of agency and ultimately sustainable development.
