Biography

Elizabeth Hoover, Ph.D., is a Teaching Professor in Musicology in the Department of Music who specializes in twentieth-century music and American experimentalism. Her research interests explore the intersections of sound, image and gesture in multimedia and screen media. She has presented at various symposiums and conferences, including those held by the Society for American Music and American Musicological Society, and published in Current Musicology, Jazz Perspectives and Notes: The Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association. Her chapter, “Collage and the Feedback Condition of Earle Brown’s Calder Piece,” was published in Beyond Notation: The Music of Earle Brown (University of Michigan Press, 2017), the first monograph on composer Earle Brown, an American pioneer in open form and indeterminacy. She has served as Digital Media author for W.W. Norton for content included in online resources for the 13th edition of Enjoyment of Music (Forney and Dell’Antonio, 2018), the 10th edition of A History of Western Music (Burkholder, et al., 2018), and the 4th edition of Enjoyment of Music Essential Listening Edition (Forney and Dell'Antonio, 2020).

Hoover's current research focuses on music history pedagogy, as well as assessment across the university's music curriculum. Her recurring teaching responsibilities in the Department of Music involve courses for music majors, including the core music history sequence, MUS211 and MUS212, A History of Western Music, and ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Plan courses for music majors and non-majors alike, including MUS313, Writing About Small Screen Sounds and MUS206, Tracking Sounds: A History of Film Music. She also teaches and advises graduate students in MUS490/590, Special Topics in Music, MUS621, Graduate Research in Music, and the MUS611 Research Project. In 2021 she was the recipient of the ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University Distinguished Teaching Award for Excellence in Graduate Instruction and Mentoring.

In 2019, Hoover was appointed a CTE Faculty Teaching Associate and has served as CTE Seminar Co-Facilitator, Midcourse Evaluation Consultant, and Departmental Liaison ever since. Near and dear to Dr. Hoover's heart is her work as the co-facilitator of the over forty-year-old faculty learning community, Advancing Teacher Scholars (or ATS, previously, Alumni Teaching Scholars) through which she mentors early-career faculty in their inquiry and engagement in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Hoover holds an M.A. in Musicology and a Ph.D. in Musicology, both from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a 2022-2023 Provost Fellow and the current Associate Director of Liberal Education.
