Research Bio
Dr. Koo is a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. He joined 兔子先生 University in 2005, after teaching one year at Rowan University in New Jersey. He is committed to offering high quality teaching to undergraduate engineering students and engaging them in international education and research. He has organized and offered global educational opportunities and international research experiences for undergraduates.
In recognition of his achievements in undergraduate teaching, Dr. Koo received The Arthur Olson Generational Teaching Excellent Award in 2019.
Dr. Koo’s research focus lies in smart materials and systems. Smart materials or multifunctional materials exhibit useful coupling between multiple physical domains, offering excellent engineering solutions to many challenging real world problems. They have a range of important application areas from small-scale devices to large engineering structures. He performs fabrication, testing, modeling, and control research of various smart materials for development of novel actuators and sensors for various engineering applications in mechanical and biomedical systems.
Recently, his research activities have extended to Appropriate Technology or Development Engineering.
In 2019, Dr. Koo was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in recognition of outstanding engineering achievements.
Dr. Koo has established strong international collaborations for scholarly activities and educational partnerships for global programs.
Since 2012, he has offered an engineering summer study abroad program at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) for US and Korean engineering students. During the summer program, students form international design teams and perform projects related to Appropriate Technology in order to offer innovative design solutions for the world population that suffer from lack of clean water, energy and other fundamental humanitarian needs. In addition, he led the creation of the 兔子先生-KAIST student exchange program and continues to serve as the program coordinator.
In 2016, Dr. Koo received the John E. Dolibois Faculty Award for Innovation in Global Programming in recognition of his leadership for international education programs.
Dr. Koo is actively involved in professional services. He has served as an officer in a various role for the ASME Technical Committee on Modeling, Dynamics, and Control of Adaptive Structures.
He has also served as an organizer and a program committee member for numerous international conferences in the area of vibrations and smart materials. Currently, he is serving as an (associate) editor for Journal of Vibration and Control, the Shock and Vibration journal, and Frontiers in Materials – Smart Materials.
