Benefits of Group Study

Group study with your classmates can help you:

• Form connections with fellow students
• Gain a better understanding of subject matter
• Avoid procrastination
• Increase your motivation and improve self-accountability

Forming a study group is easiest when you use the Study Buddies feature in Navigate. To find this, go to your and search for “” (If this is your first time using Navigate, you will be asked to fill out a brief survey first.) On the left side of the Navigate home screen, you’ll find the Study Buddies feature listed among several other options. Look for the icon depicting two people who are standing close together.

The Study Buddies feature allows you to see whether any classmates in your courses signed up for a study group. If Navigate tells you that no one else has signed up yet, sign up anyway. Other students might not realize they need a study group yet and end up registering halfway through the semester. Once another student from your class joins the group, Navigate will notify you via email and tell you how to connect with each other.

Tips for Effective Study Groups

Before

• Organize your material.
• Make study aids (charts, diagrams, flashcards, timelines).
• Prepare questions from the material and or a study guide.

During

• Establish goals for your study session.
• Set a timer for a fully focused study session (30, 40, 50 minutes).
• Reward yourselves with a five-minute break (go for a walk, eat, check your phone).
• Share study techniques and ask questions.

After

• Review the material that you covered.
• Assess what you will need to cover on your own or in the next study session.
