Functional status and adaptation: Measuring activities of daily living and device use in the national health and aging trends study
This study compared Dr. Sidney Katz's original dichotomous measure of dependence in performing activities of daily living (ADL) with the National Health and Aging Trends Study's (NHATS) broader spectrum of functional status, demonstrating that many community-dwelling older adults can adapt to functional impairment rather than requiring assistance from another person in completing ADL.
