ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Department of Mathematics has added Applied Mathematics as a new major joining its Mathematics and Mathematics and Statistics programs to welcome a new cohort of students enrolling in Fall 2025. The new major is intended to meet the changing needs of graduates seeking to apply their mathematical skills across a rising share of occupations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, within the next decade, overall employment in math-related occupations is projected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. This means that employers are seeking applicants capable of using mathematical and related computational methods to solve a diverse array of practical challenges in the changing global workforce.

“We created our to help students develop a foundation to build mathematical models and analyze data in real-world settings,” said Anna Ghazaryan, professor and chair of Mathematics. “They can choose electives in the sciences, technology, engineering, or other areas of interest to complement and provide context to their mathematical training.”

The original Mathematics major is offered as both a B.S. and a B.A. Besides its majors, the department also offers a Mathematics minor and 12-credit hour certificates in both and . In addition, the Combined Bachelor's-Master's degree program allows students to graduate with both an undergraduate degree and a Master of Science in Mathematics in five years.

The department, one of the oldest at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University, hosted its 50th Annual Mathematics Conference in October. The topic of the conference, “Mathematical Foundations of Machine Learning,” focused on applied math and offered presentation opportunities for students.

After occupying it for over three decades, the department recently moved out of Bachelor Hall, which is set to become ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s new humanities hub in Fall 2026. With Upham Hall as their new home, Mathematics faculty now teach courses in Upham, Laws, and other locations on campus, and Ghazaryan says their excitement for the new Applied Mathematics major is growing.

“We provide the foundational training necessary for graduate work as well as careers in education, business, industry, and public service — anywhere that requires logic, skilled analysis, and a knack at solving problems,” said Ghazaryan. “We’re proud that our versatile offerings are meeting the evolving career-minded needs of our students.”
