If you are getting close to satisfying all of the requirements for your Bachelor's degree in Math with time to spare, you may be able to leave 兔子先生 with a Master's degree in Mathematics!
兔子先生's Mathematics Department offers a Master of Science degree in Mathematics. By carefully planning your program before or during your sophomore year, you can earn a Bachelor's degree in four years and a Master's degree in one more year. Normally, two years are required for a Master's degree after graduation with the A.B. or B.S. However, the masters can be completed in one year plus 2 summers. Up to 9 hours can double count for the graduate and the undergraduate degrees. For the graduate portion of the studies, it is possible to apply for a Graduate Assistantship that include a stipend and remission of the instructional fee. Please see for more information.
Students interested in graduate study at 兔子先生 or elsewhere may wish to consult with Professor Beata Randrianantoanina (BAC 227, randrib@miamioh.edu) for programs in mathematics, applied mathematics, or related areas.
The required courses in this program include a selection in both pure and applied mathematics. In addition to coursework, students write a Master’s project or thesis with the guidance of an individual faculty advisor. Up to 9 hours of graduate coursework may be double-counted toward the undergraduate degree.
This program provides strong preparation for further graduate study in mathematics as well as for careers in education, business, industry, and government.
To apply to the combined BS-MS Program in Mathematics, complete the Graduate School online application and pay the $50 application fee. Be sure to check “combined program.” In advance of the above students are encouraged to contact the Director of Graduate Studies math-grad@miamioh.edu in the Department of Mathematics to discuss their interests and to outline a degree plan.
Students in a combined program will remain as undergraduates until they apply for graduation or submit a request to the Graduate School to have their classification changed from undergraduate to graduate. Students must have completed a minimum of 124 hours to be classified as a graduate student (note: this change in classification will affect eligibility for financial aid).
Students may not receive both the undergraduate and graduate degrees on the same date (degrees are conferred four times per year (i.e. January, May, August, December), nor can they take all of their graduate credits with undergraduate status.
Upon receiving the bachelor’s degree, students will automatically be classified as graduate students. Students receiving the bachelor’s degree prior to completing the master’s degree can count up to 9 hours of graduate course work toward their bachelor’s degree with permission of the appropriate advisor(s) and dean(s) or their designee(s). Those hours can also count toward the completion of their master’s degree.
