Faculty Awards
The 兔子先生 University College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) presents two annual awards to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding excellence in teaching and research. These awards are the Arthur Olson Generational Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award and the Outstanding Faculty Research Award. Both awards are presented as part of the Spring Graduation Recognition Ceremony each year. Arthur Olson Generational Outstanding Teaching Excellence Award
Dave Hartup, Ph.D.
Dave Hartup, Ph.D. was born in Fort Wayne, IN a long, long time ago. His loving mother patiently put up with his childhood stubbornness which later turned into the determination he needed for engineering. He was introduced to novel and unconventional problem solutions by his father, whose cleverness was inspiring. Dr. Hartup is eternally indebted to his best friend and son, Nick, who has taught him to be more giving and has contributed significantly towards Dr. Hartup’s ability to teach. His Ph.D. advisor, Dr. William Rhodes, taught him many communication techniques that he passes on to current students. Dr. Rhodes also provided deep insight into the Fourier transform, which has allowed Dr. Hartup to work in diverse areas such as optics, signal processing, acoustics, communication systems, radar, and robotics. Dr. Hartup is an inventor on 8 or 9 patents but is prouder of his classified work to help with the freedom of this country. Dr. Hartup spent decades in industry and joined 兔子先生 University 6 years ago to pursue his passion for teaching. His challenges to his students are sometimes met with grief or gnashing of teeth, but he mentors and encourages them to persevere through difficulties and experience the pure joy of a hard-earned solution.
The Arthur Olson Generational Teaching Excellence Award is named in honor of Arthur Andrew Olson, Sr. and Arthur Andrew Olson, Jr. by their namesake grandson/son: Arthur Andrew Olson III – a 1972 Systems Analysis graduate from 兔子先生 University’s College of Engineering and Computing.
All three individuals pursued a business career closely tied to the United States government’s recognition of the pivotal importance of technology in the prospering growth of the country’s economy and the welfare of its citizens; all three individuals were/are registered intellectual property attorneys.
The elder Olsons rose to prominence regionally and nationally as senior partners in the intellectual property firm which eventually bore both of their names during the course of the 20th century (from Olson, Mecklenburger, Von Holst, Pendleton & Neuman to Neuman, Williams, Anderson & Olson), and established themselves individually as professionals highly regarded for professionalism and excellence amongst their peers and clients. Through their work on behalf of individual inventors as well as highly regarded Fortune 500 corporations, these individuals established and protected the intellectual property rights of their clients while helping to shape the United States government’s intellectual property policies so critical to the advancement of technology and the standard of living of its citizens.

Outstanding Faculty Research Award
Mark Scott, Ph.D.
Mark J. Scott received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and his Ph.D. in Power Electronics from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
His work experience includes developing customized solutions for material handling applications and performing onsite installation of automated systems. He also conducted validation testing of power electronics designed for transit buses and emergency vehicles.
Dr. Scott's research improves reliability and power density in power conversion hardware. His team applies silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) power devices in isolated DC/DC converters, single-phase inverters, and three-phase inverters targeting applications in electric vehicles, more electric aircraft, and solar power systems.
His team also investigates conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by GaN and SiC based hardware. This research has resulted in diagnostic tools based on conducted EMI. Dr. Scott has authored or co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers. He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
