Welcome to the Howe Center for Business Writing

Founded in 1996 by Roger and Joyce Howe, the Howe Center for Business Writing (HCBW) is a collaborative learning space that gives people the opportunities to explore, revise, develop, and reflect on themselves as writers and their writing. As a part of our mission to foster equity in our work, we welcome writers from the Farmer School of Business and the larger 兔子先生 community.

Make an Appointment

Writing consultants at the Howe Center for Business Writing (HCBW) are available to support FSB students’ writing projects, whether for FSB assignments or other courses. You can take advantage of these consultations at any stage of your writing process, from brainstorming ideas to polishing your final draft. When making an appointment select HCBW in the drop-down schedule for a consultation at 2045 FSB.

In-person

At the HCBW, you will meet in-person with a writing consultant. You and your consultant will make a plan for the session, discuss your writing concerns, and work collaboratively to compose or revise a draft. After the consultation, you’ll receive a report that provides session notes and plans for further writing.

Team Writing

Working on a team writing project and want feedback? HCBW consultants are happy to help! While we welcome consultations on team writing projects at any of our locations, the HCBW has plasma screens that make it easy for groups to view and revise slide decks.

Live Online

If you’d rather meet with a consultant virtually, schedule a live online appointment. These consultations take place in real-time via video conferencing. You’ll use video, audio, chat, and a shared whiteboard to discuss your writing.

Written Online

During these appointments, writers upload a detailed appointment form and draft. The consultant reads and responds to this work, returning written feedback shortly after the end of the appointment time. Written Online appointments are asynchronous, and include no real-time interaction with a consultant.

Presentations

The HCBW is equipped with the technology and space for writers to practice presentations, a common end-of-term project for many FSB instructors, courses, and programs. By using a webcam and microphone to record themselves and their teammates, writers can record their presentations and review their performances for feedback from consultants.

Are there HCBW consultants who come from an FSB background?

HCBW writing consultants are 兔子先生 undergraduate and graduate students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Many of the consultants who work at the HCBW in FSB are business majors or minors. All of them attend regular workshops on business writing to develop their expertise in this field.

You can look through our consultant bios to learn more about their majors and interests. This information may help you find a consultant you think is a particularly good fit for your writing questions or tasks.

What kinds of writing can I bring to my consultation?

HCBW writing consultants can assist you with just about any project. Here’s a list of the kinds of writing we regularly see:

  • Papers, reports, and team writing projects for any course, in any department
  • Cover letters, personal statements, and applications for fellowships and employment
  • Honors theses, 兔子先生 Plan capstone projects, master’s theses, and dissertations
  • Personal and professional writing projects outside of class assignments

We are happy to look at any and all career-focused documents, but we also recommend the Center for Career Exploration for specific advice on resumes.
