Harnessing Decentralized Data to Improve Advising and Student Success

Efforts to provide truly holistic advising are often stifled by the Inaccessibility of data that lives within decentralized institutional silos. This interactive session will enable participants to identify and prioritize sources of potentially untapped data, explore strategies for collaborating with campus stakeholders to harness it, and examine the tradeoffs between using data for proactive and reactive interventions and outreach. Examples of departmental data being used to improve advising and student success outcomes will also be presented.

International Student Networking: ACE Connecting with Studnets

In this session, we will present the role of ACE on campus as well as the manner in which ACE has leveraged its use of the social networking platform WeChat to connect with students and support transition to 兔子先生 University. Participants will see how to set up their own WeChat accounts and invite others to participate with them, as well as how to promote events and reach students both individually and in groups. Hi, We're from SDS, and We're Here to Help!

Student Disability Services (SDS) is the responsible party for qualifying students for accommodations and services at 兔子先生 University. Using its new online case management system which is called Students Accessing 兔子先生 (SAM), SDS is now able to track and serve students in ways that support the recruitment and retention efforts of the institution. In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the processes followed from the time a student completes an application for accommodations and services to the point of communicating with instructors through the faculty notification letter email that is sent, scheduling a test, and requesting alternative formats. Using the data captured through SAM, participants will gain an understanding of how staffing has changed to allow the director to focus on more outreach to the campus community, change the model of how students with dual diagnosis and ADHD are served, and provide the framework of why SDS accommodation coordinators reach out to the advising community to help facilitate changes to a student's schedule when appropriate

Common Learning Concerns of Students in Academic Jeopardy

Christina Carrubba-Whetstine, Director of the Rinella Learning Center

I will present data from the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI). This instrument is administered to students on academic warning and academic probation to assess primary areas of learning concern. Strategies for talking with students about these learning concerns will be discussed.

Pathways to Student Success

Cathy Moore, Academic Advisor - Pathways Program & College Credit Plus

Pathways is a short-term, intensive program designed to develop and promote alternatives for students placed on the wait list when seeking admission to 兔子先生 University's selective Oxford campus. Students invited to participate in Pathways have solid academic records. Rather than lose them to another institution, they are given the opportunity to begin on a regional campus. The program allows students to move from a regional campus to the Oxford campus after one semester. Pathways students enjoy benefits such as mentoring, priority class registration, guaranteed housing assignments, a dedicated academic advisor, and special scholarship opportunities.

Alcohol's Impace on Office Hours and Advising

In spring 2016, data were collected from faculty and staff concerning 兔子先生's alcohol climate. A small percentage of classroom situations and office hours were impacted by substance use. In response, many respondents reported that the student was asked to leave and police were called. Themes from the data will be discussed as will ways to address this in the advising situation
