Mike Armstrong is the past Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Health System Corporation and Hospital. He is the retired Chairman and Director Emeritus of Comcast Corporation and the former Chairman and CEO of AT&T and Hughes Electronics. Prior to these positions he spent more than three decades with IBM. Beginning as a systems engineer, he rose through the ranks to become Chairman of the Board of the IBM World Trade Corporation.

Born October 18, 1938 in Detroit, Armstrong earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University of Ohio in 1961 and completed the advanced management curriculum at Dartmouth Institute in 1976. He was awarded honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Pepperdine University in 1997, Loyola Marymount University in 1998, Shenandoah University in 2004, ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University in 2007, Johns Hopkins University in 2011, and a Doctor of Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2000.

Armstrong is the past Vice Chairman, Johns Hopkins University, Chair of the Corporate /Foundation Campaign at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University, and a Trustee of ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University. He is co-founder and past President of ABC (A Better Chance) in Darien, CT and past President of the Darien, CT YMCA. He is a member of The All Stars Advisory Board in NYC.

Mike is philanthropically active in the U.S. in higher education, medical research, community needs, disadvantaged kids and infrastructure projects in Guatemala. His funding at Johns Hopkins University supported the Armstrong Medical Education Building, the Armstrong Chair in Stem Cell Research and a promising research project addressing metastized prostate cancer. His support at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University of Ohio enabled the Armstrong Student Center and an advanced digital technology program Armstrong Interactive Media Studies (AIMS, now ETBD) with the creation of an AIMS Chair and four Professorships.

Armstrong is the former Chairman of the President’s Export Council (President Clinton), the U.S.-Japan Business Council, and the FCC’s Network Reliability and Interoperability Council. He is a former member of the Business Council, the Business Roundtable where he served as chairman of the Homeland Security Task Force, The National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee and The Defense Policy Advisory Committee and Visiting Professor, MIT Sloan School. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and The Conference Board. Armstrong serves on the Board of Directors of IHS (Information Handling Services), IDS, The Philharmonic Center for the Arts (Naples, FL), the Forum Club of Southwest Florida and the Telluride Foundation. He is a senior advisor at SV Investment Partners and Tudor Venture Capital.

Marta Foster works and lives by a vision: Be a trailblazer. Her goal, however, is not about being first, but rather to have the courage to try, and the desire to help others find the way. Throughout her 32-year career at P&G, Marta has “led the way” on countless projects, including serving as the company’s first female IT Vice President, where she is responsible for delivering many of P&G’s global shared services. “Everything you want,” she says playing back a favorite quote, “is on the other side of fear. All you have to do is walk through it.”

Born in Spain, Marta’s career with P&G began when she signed on as quality engineer for Pringles in 1977. She quickly moved on to a variety of assignments, and then in 1983 moved into IT. She worked in several locations around the country and world before moving to Cincinnati, where she ran IT for several of P&G’s leading brands. Marta was named Vice President of IT for Beauty – the business unit that houses all of P&G’s beauty products – and then in 2005, was named Vice President of Business Solutions, Global Business Services. Most recently, Marta has been given responsibility for delivering GBS Services for P&G’s Global Business Units and markets.

Marta lives in Cincinnati with her husband Mike, also a 32-year P&G manager. She also has two adult children, Mic and Maclain.

Rich earned his Ph.D from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú in Educational Administration in 1981. He received a B.A. in English, Journalism from Rutgers University and a Master of Science from Indiana University.

Rich is a Partner for Venrock, a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California. As a 25-year veteran of Silicon Valley, Rich has served as a business consultant, social scientist, best-selling author and evangelist for organization effectiveness. Previously, he served as a partner at Accenture in the technology, entertainment, media and entertainment practice.

Rich has written five best-selling books, including his latest, Nuts, Bolts and Jolts: Fundamental Business and Life Lessons You Must Know. He is also a frequent speaker on effective business growth issues and has appeared on NBC, CNN, and National Public Radio and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Fortune and other publications. In his spare time, he runs a small, family vineyard and winery in Knights Valley. In addition, Rich has served as Chairman of the Board for Golden Gate University in San Francisco and the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society and currently sits on the board of Glu Mobile, Sutura, and The Mechanics Bank. In February 2008, he spoke at the IMS symposium where Mike Armstrong announced the establishment of the ETBD Institute. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, Carol.

Patty graduated from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú in 1980 with a B.A. in Mathematics and Statistics and a B.S. in Mathematics Education. Patty is CIO of Cardinal Healthcare and previously was Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Motorola. She oversaw all strategic, operational and financial aspects of the company’s information technology architecture, systems, tools, processes and infrastructure. Patty joined Motorola in 2005 and led an effort to build a global IT organization that delivers world-class IT value creation. In her first year, Motorola jumped from a #46 to a #12 ranking among the InformationWeek Top 500 IT innovators for 2006, and it ranked #1 in the manufacturing industry segment.

Before joining Motorola, Patty served as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Office Depot, Inc. Prior to this, she was CIO of The Quaker Oats Company in Chicago. As CIO, she oversaw Quaker’s systems integration with PepsiCo following Pepsi’s acquisition of Quaker Oats in 2001. She was CIO of GE Industrial Systems and worked for Procter & Gamble. She currently serves on the boards of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, SPSS, and Jo-Ann Stores, Inc.

As a student ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú, Patty was a member of the Choraliers. She still supports this group. She lives in Chicago.

Jack has degrees from Youngstown State University, 1971 and Texas A&M, 1973. Jack is the Past President and Chief Operating Officer of Parsons Corporation, one of the world’s largest engineering and construction companies. Jack is a recognized expert in the technologies and processes for destruction of the world’s stockpile of chemical and biological agents and weapons. He was responsible for development of the technologies for both incineration and neutralization of these hazardous materials. In addition, he has played a key role in the design, construction, and operation of every major chemical agent demilitarization facility in the world. He holds multiple patents on the processes to dispose of these agents, explosives, and their containers. He has provided expert testimony to numerous congressional committees, the National Research Council, federal and local regulatory agencies, and citizen involvement groups. He has authored and presented numerous papers on related subjects throughout the world. He has recently been a key advisor to the government of Japan for treatment and disposal options of more than 2 million Japanese chemical weapons buried and abandoned in China. He also led the team for the design and construction of the facilities in Russia to dispose of the Russian stockpile of chemical nerve agents.

Jack has been a leader in promoting collaboration between industry and academia. He serves on both the Industrial Engineering and School of Engineering advisory councils at Texas A&M. Through his initiatives, Parsons has established scholarships at numerous universities, co-funded a rapid prototype development laboratory at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University of Ohio, developed a 100% distance learning masters degree program in project management at Texas A&M, sponsors more than 80 internships for college students in related fields of science and engineering, and sponsors faculty research and Development Leave opportunities.

He has received numerous awards and recognition such as Captains of Industry Award, Institute of Industrial Engineers, US Army Toxic Hazardous Materials Agency Outstanding Service Award, and the Department of Industrial Engineering Outstanding Alumnus Award, Texas A&M, just to name a few.

Jack has been involved with the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors, the Texas A&M Industrial Engineering Advisory Council, and the Youngstown State University Centennial Campaign Committee. He currently sits on the Armstrong Institute for Interactive Media Studies (ETBD) Advisory Council for ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú.

John Skillings is a longtime ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University faculty member and administrator and original founding administrator of the IMS program.

John’s willingness to engage difficult issues, his fairness and his effective leadership in a succession of roles have earned him the respect, support and admiration of a great number of faculty and staff.

His blend of talents have been invaluable in helping ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú retain and enhance its status as a university where outstanding teaching is complemented by nationally recognized scholarship and research.

Skillings joined ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Mathematics and Statistics Department in 1976, served as chair of the department from 1987–93, as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Science from 1994–1999, Dean of the College of Arts and Science, June 1999 –2004, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, July 2004-June 2005, Vice Provost and Senior Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, July 2005-June 2008 and Interim Provost, July 2010-April 2011.

He has served as principal or co-principal investigator on seven grants or contracts, authored more than two dozen scholarly articles or book chapters, served as associate editor of The American Statistician and as a statistical consultant with companies such as Procter & Gamble and General Electric.

Skillings’ undergraduate degree is from Manchester College, his master’s from ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and his doctorate from Ohio State. Prior to joining ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s faculty, he was an assistant professor at Western Michigan University, a statistical consultant at Ohio State and an instructor at Northern Virginia Community College.
