Creating Text Sets: Building Knowledge and Reading Comprehension in ELA and Contents
November 2nd - 3rd, 2024 - at VOALC
Learning and literacy doesn’t occur in a vacuum. When students read to learn, they employ both their word recognition and their language comprehension. A key component of this comprehension is background knowledge. How do teachers support students in building background knowledge? How do we engage students in new content and learning? One answer: Text Sets. Using text sets in the classroom supports the key comprehension skill of building knowledge, enhances engagement and interest and builds in multimodal learning.
Join OWP and K-12 teachers as we define text sets and explore their power in the literacy classroom. Participants will read current research and rationale for using text sets to build reading and writing practices, engage with multiple text sets to support literacy skill instruction and leave with your own text set to use in your classroom. Built for and by K-12 teachers of any content area.
One semester hour of graduate credit or 1.3 CEUs.
