The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is 32-credit hour degree program designed for working K-12 teachers. With a focus on classroom research and reflection, the OWP MAT enables teachers to work together to share practical, impactful strategies that can be directly applied to the classroom and students. Created for teachers by teachers, the OWP MAT program is flexible and meaningful for teachers looking to find their professional home.

Teaching of Writing Certificate

The Teaching of Writing Certificate is an 18-credit hour program for teachers who already have their master's degree and are looking for new ways to showcase their expertise in literacy instruction. The Teaching of Writing Certificate is built on choice and flexibility, giving teachers the opportunity to explore elective classes that are meaningful to their teaching and their classrooms.

Graduate Credit Workshops

The Ohio Writing Project offers a wide variety of stand-alone courses that are open to all K-12 educators. All OWP workshops are taught by classroom teachers and focus on the best in contemporary theory and practice, involve active participation, and support teachers as they build skills across all areas of literacy. OWP credit workshops are offered in-person, online, and hybrid formats, and explore the most relevant topics in education and literacy instruction in the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take OWP workshops without being enrolled in one of the graduate programs?

Yes! OWP credit workshops are open to all K-12 teachers! You will be able to register for the class as a non-degree student. All OWP workshops are $375 per credit hour for all teachers.

I already have my master's degree but am looking to teach CCP classes. What is my best option?

For teachers who already have their master's degree, the Teaching of Writing Certificate is the perfect option! Because the certificate is composed of 18 English graduate hours, it meets ODE requirements for College Credit Plus English certification. (Final determination of qualification is made by the sponsoring university)

What is the difference between the MAT and the Teaching of Writing Certificate?

The MAT is a 32-credit hour master's program, while the Teaching of Writing Certificate is an 18-credit hour certificate program. Both programs require the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute and OWP electives - but the MAT also includes 11 credits of classroom research.
