Alumni of the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum (HWAC) Faculty Writing Fellows Program are eligible for special grants to support their writing-related research, including travel to share results or learn about methods, theories, research, and projects that can inform their work. Grants will support research projects that will have an impact beyond one individual’s classroom. Grants of up to $500 are awarded and the HCWE will fund up to 5 projects a year, depending on budget availability.

Alumni may apply for grants by submitting an application letter to HCWE Director Elizabeth Wardle (wardleea@miamioh.edu) that addresses the following:

• The problem your project addresses, with a clear explanation of how it directly relates to writing;
• Your guiding research question(s);
• Research plans;
• How this project connects to your work with the HCWE Fellows;
• How your project will benefit writing and writers beyond your classroom at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and even beyond (including in your field);
• A timeline;
• A budget for your project; and
• Deliverables for this project that you will share with the HCWE or the larger ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú community (for example, workshops, written resources, etc) or your field (conference presentations, workshops for colleagues in your field, etc).

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The HWAC team will review your application and alert you to its status as soon as possible. 

Frequently Asked Questioned (FAQ)

How do I know if my project is a good fit for a Fellows grant? Our goal is to fund research projects that will a) forward the work of HCWE Fellows and b) have a clear impact on teaching and learning of writing at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and beyond (especially within Fellows’ own fields). You can reach out to Elizabeth Wardle and/or Mandy Olejnik for consultation to see if your research project is a good fit for a grant.

How are grant applications reviewed? The HWAC team will read applications based on the criteria listed above, paying particular attention to how the proposed research project will benefit writing and writing instruction at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú (beyond one’s individual classroom) and beyond. 

Can I apply to support an ongoing project started before Fellows? The research project must have a clear focus on writing instruction and relate in some way to your work in Fellows.

Can I apply as part of a team? Yes! We encourage faculty to continue their work in disciplinary teams. Grants are still limited to a $500 maximum, regardless of how many team members are on the project.

Can I be awarded more than one grant? In an effort to support as many projects as possible, faculty are limited to earning one grant in a five year period.

Fellows Grant Assessment Criteria

Fellows alumni grants are evaluated on the following criteria:

• Does the proposed research project address a compelling research question related to writing? 
• Will the project impact writing instruction at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú or beyond?
• Does the project connect to work with the HCWE Fellows?
• Will the project benefit writing and writers at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú and even beyond (including in the applicant’s discipline?
• Are there deliverables that will benefit the HCWE or the larger ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú community (for example, workshops, written resources, etc) or the applicant’s field (conference presentations, workshops for colleagues in your field, etc)?
