"I feel comfortable approaching the Honors College staff and know that they are willing to help me. This past summer, I wanted to do an internship of some sort and the Honors College staff encouraged me to apply to an internship with the U.S. House of Representatives with my Congressman. And the Honors College supported me with that. They helped me through the application. They came along and supported me on a very personal level to pursue that internship, which I completed."

James hopes to become a research professor in the future after pursuing a master's degree and doctorate degree. James has been involved in research with Biology faculty David Russell, Ph.D. since his first year. James recently worked with Dr. Russell to design his current research project studying tick distribution and abundance in Butler and Preble county. This research includes studying the proportions of ticks that carry diseases and what diseases they carry.
"The Honors College actually really helped me get into research. My first semester freshman year, I was in BIO 115 honors with Dr. Russell and Dr. Balish. And, Dr. Russell at some point stood in front of the class and said 'I have some work that would be good for a freshman to do'. I said 'yes'. It was because of the size of the smaller honors classes that helped me actually get that opportunity, because he wouldn’t stand in front of a lecture of a hundred people and say that. So, I got to know him pretty well, and from there, the current research idea just kind of came into fruition. It was because of Honors that I’m actually doing research in the first place."
What I'm studying: Business Analytics major
Where I'm from: Amsterdam, Netherlands

"I took an honors class, first semester of my first year, which was really interesting. Just starting out in that kind of class was very nice because one, it was outside the business school, and two, it was one of my only classes where I was able to interact with people that were in different grade levels and different majors, which was really interesting. And my honors course allowed for deeper conversations and just more of a different perspective.
And then I did an Honors extension on my journalism class, which was really interesting for me personally because I wrote a paper on how race has played a role in journalism. It was more of a passion project, which was fun."
